Facundo Pellistri sets up Edinson Cavani for Uruguay’s ‘Made in Manchester’ goal

Two Manchester United players combined brilliantly late last night as Uruguay beat Mexico 3-0 in a friendly in Arizona.

The outgoing Edinson Cavani scored a magnificent brace inside the first eight minutes of the second half after Matias Vecino had opened the lead in the 35th minute.

Cavani’s first came after brilliant work on the right wing from young United star, Facundo Pellistri.

Collecting the ball almost immediately after the second half kick-off, the 20-year-old performed a skill move to leave two Mexican defenders floundering before taking it down the wing at pace and crossing for Cavani to slot it coolly home.

At club level, it has been a difficult year for Pellistri, who spent the season on loan at Spanish side Deportivo Alaves.

The former Peñarol man managed just 23 appearances over the course of last season, averaging just 32 minutes on the pitch in those games.

However, his performances for United in the 2021/22 preseason, which he capped with a goal against Derby County, and for his national side have been more promising.

United paid €8.5 million for the winger in October 2020 as part of a double swoop of young wingers when a deal to sign Jadon Sancho failed to materialise. Amad Diallo was the other purchase at that time.

Incoming manager Erik ten Hag has promised he will give all players a chance to impress him during the summer before deciding whether they will be a part of his squad or go out on loan.

With more performances such as last night’s, Pellistri could emerge as a surprise candidate to nail down the right wing berth next season.
